Mephistopheles of Ravens
Mephistopheles of Ravens is the youngest son of Lucifer of Ravens and, perhaps, the most dangerous of his brood. From an early age, Mephistopheles possessed a rare and unwavering conviction: what was done to his father was wrong and wrongs left unanswered for generations eventually become reasons for war.
He was first called “The Demon Spawn” by the Watchers who feared what he might become. The courts and guardians of the Realms later adopted the name as a warning, marking his presence wherever he appeared. Eventually, even his own siblings used it, sometimes affectionately, but never without a measure of unease. Mephistopheles never objected to the name. A name born of fear was a name that served its purpose.
The Son of Lucifer
Mephistopheles inherited his father’s striking, angular features, a face that commanded attention and suggested that whatever he was about to say was worth hearing, even when it should not be. From his mother, a human woman of the Realms who loved Lucifer of Ravens with an almost consuming devotion, he inherited something darker: an understanding of love, loss, and the terrible price of devotion. But the quality that truly set Mephistopheles apart was entirely his own.
His mind. Patient. Calculating. Methodical.
He could wait years for the right moment and decades for the right opportunity. He did not act on impulse. He observed, studied, planned, and then struck with devastating precision. Where others saw obstacles, Mephistopheles saw problems to be solved. Where others saw time, he saw opportunity. And where others saw his father’s imprisonment as an ancient tragedy, Mephistopheles saw an unfinished injustice.
The Question
He did not openly rage against his father’s imprisonment. He did not mourn Lucifer in public. Those emotions had been spent long ago, in the cold and ruined chambers where the Brood of Ravens once gathered in secret.
There, in solitude, Mephistopheles had allowed himself to rage. He had grieved. And then he had stripped both emotions away. What remained was a single question. It was simple, precise, and impossible to ignore:
“Where is the cage that holds our father, and who holds the key?”
For generations, Mephistopheles searched for the answer. Human kingdoms rose and fell. Lords who had once whispered Lucifer of Ravens’ name as a warning became dust, followed by their children and grandchildren. Borders changed. Castles became ruins. Old legends faded into myth. Mephistopheles endured. And he searched.
The Search for the Two
He moved through the Norophim Realms like a shadow carried by the wind, appearing where he was least expected and disappearing before anyone could understand what he had been seeking.
He sat among scholars studying the geography and forgotten history of the Realms, asking questions that appeared academic but were carefully designed to uncover ancient secrets. He traveled with shapeshifter companies along roads leading into territories that no surviving map could accurately name.
For two years, he lived among the dark Elementals of a remote monastery, allowing them to believe he was merely a historian researching obscure theological disputes. During that time, he studied every surviving record concerning the age before Lucifer’s imprisonment.
But Mephistopheles wasn’t searching for history. He was searching for people.
Two souls. Two who remembered. Two who had sworn the unbreakable vow.
Two individuals who had carried the location of Lucifer’s prison within them for decades. It was a secret so heavy that time had changed them, but had never made them forget. Mephistopheles believed he was finally getting close.
“Fear Is a Direction”
He could sense it. Not through magic, prophecy, or some supernatural revelation, but through the subtle changes that occur when people realize they are being watched. There was a pressure in certain places. A strange stillness in the corridors of certain castles. Conversations that abruptly ended when he entered a room. Eyes that lingered a moment too long before looking away.
Someone knew what he was searching for. And more importantly—Someone was afraid that he would find it. Mephistopheles considered that a good sign.
One autumn evening, he turned his black horse toward the gates of the next city as fog rolled through the valley below. A faint smile crossed his face, and he uttered a single word, “Foozle…”
For Mephistopheles, fear was never merely an emotion. Fear was a direction. Follow fear to what it protects, and eventually, you find what you need. And after generations of waiting, Mephistopheles of Ravens was finally running out of patience.
This would lead to the Rebellion of Ravens
